Terranova - Nature Centre of Kvarken

HYLJEVENE

Terranova is the Nature Centre of Kvarken situated in Vaasa, Finland and maintained by the Nature Science department of the Ostrobothnian museum and Metsähallitus. Terranova was opened in 2002 and this year will celebrate its 12th anniversary. Up to now, more than 180 000 visitors from all around the world have visited its exhibitions which tell the unique story of the land uplift in the area, about the natural environment of the Kvarken and its protected areas. It also provides information about tourism and special activities in this unique landscape. Kvarken archipelago has been added in Unesco’s world heritage list in July 2006

When the last Ice Age reached its greatest extent about 20,000 years ago, the Kvarken was at the very centre of a continental ice sheet. A huge mass of ice three kilometres, forced the earth´s crust inwards by more than one kilometre. As the ice sheet melted, the first stripes of land called moraines of Kvarken were formed and as the ice became thinner the land surface began to rise to its former level. As the land is continously rising in the Kvarken area at the rate of 8 mm/year, every year about 300 hectares of new land appears on the coast of Ostrobothnia in west Finland. In the shallow waters of Kvarken, both vegetation and animal life have to adapt themselves to the continous and rapid process of change.
